Premarital Exams

A premarital exam is similar to a women’s first annual exam. The main difference is that the premarital exam will focus primarily on birth control and the fact that a woman will be having sex for the first time. It isn’t vital for a woman to see a doctor before having sex for the first time, but it is important if she wants to start using some form of contraception.

Another discussion at the premarital exam is to educate women on their bodies and to see if they have any questions or concerns. The premarital exam should help to reduce frustration and discomfort associated with onset sexual activity.

Rachelle Jones, FNP-C, wants a premarital exam to be a beneficial and stress-free experience. She believes that education and teaching can help reduce stress. Addressing any areas of concern now can help prevent problems in the future.

Vista Healthcare provides free vaginal dilators if appropriate for the patient.

At Vista Healthcare, we can help you decide which form of birth control is best for you. We offer the following options:

  • Barrier methods: Condoms, diaphragm
  • Hormonal methods: Birth control pills, (NuvaRing) vaginal ring contraceptive, (Nexplanon) arm implant, contraceptive injection (Depo-Provera), and contraceptive patch (Ortho Evra)
  • Intrauterine devices (IUDs): Hormonal IUD (Kyleena, Mirena) and non-hormonal IUD (ParaGard)
  • Sterilization: Tubal ligation or the Essure for women, and vasectomy for men
  • Natural family planning: Using basal body temperature and cervical mucus method and rhythm methods to prevent pregnancy.

Condoms and the rhythm/timing method all prevent sperm from reaching the egg.

Spermicide helps to inactivate or damage sperm.

Birth control pills use a small amount of synthetic hormone, which is released and inhibits the body’s natural cyclical process. The hormonal contraceptive stops the body from ovulating.

IUDs thicken cervical mucus so that sperm can't pass through it as easily.
